Based in Guernsey in The Channel Islands, General & Medical Insurance Ltd was formed in 2006 as the commercial insurer for the General & Medical Group, initially to underwrite the UK medical risk for the Group. As it has grown and developed under the guidance and direction of a highly experienced board of directors we have increasingly underwritten other types of risk through the insurance company.

Guernsey has a long established Financial Sector, the high levels of expertise available in all areas of general insurance is an important factor in enabling General & Medical to develop and grow its Commercial Insurance business.

Regulation

Guernsey Financial Services Commission (GFSC) located at Glategny Court, St Peter Port, Guernsey are the regulators for General & Medical Insurance Ltd. They are a robust regulator with a reputation for a flexible, pragmatic approach to regulation.

Clients have access to Channel Islands Financial Ombudsman (CIFO) based in Jersey. CIFO is the trusted independent dispute-resolution service for unresolved complaints involving financial services provided in or from the Channel Islands of Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, and Sark.

For stability and growth

In addition to prudent underwriting of risk on a daily basis, we at General & Medical have taken the view that the company investments should be carefully considered to provide solid and secure capital growth with good dividend returns, to help towards long-term stability and growth for General & Medical Insurance and the General & Medical Group as a whole.

General & Medical Insurance Ltd investments include The Channel Islands Property Fund which invests in Grade A office buildings with Blue Chip Legal and Financial Institutions and Government tenants. Property includes; Regency Court, Glategny Court, and Carey House on Guernsey. Liberation House, Windward House, 11-15 Seaton Place, 17A-18 Esplanade and 39-40 Esplanade, on Jersey, and Fort Anne on the Isle of Man.

Contribution to the UK economy and stability of the Group

Guernsey, in particular, provides substantial benefit to the UK economy. Many of its offshore operations are Sterling based and their trading and investment operations support the strength of Sterling.

Its UK owned commercial insurers and captive insurance companies give increased financial strength and competitiveness to their UK parents. Its foreign insurance business produces substantial UK inwards reinsurance.
